Why your office space is more of a talent magnet than you think

Offices are often seen as merely the four walls and roof around a business, without any tangible input or effect on your company’s productivity. However, this mindset is changing, and these outdated ideas about offices spaces are on the way out.

In fast-growing companies where every worker has high levels of responsibility, each individual is a crucial asset – and this means attracting, retaining and motivating top talent is key.

Now, when you think of how to do this, the first thing that comes to mind might be extra benefits or a higher salary. But that’s not the only way to recruit and hold onto that talent. The office itself can also play a significant part in the changing world of work.

A positive working environment

According to RICS research, almost 90% of British workers say that a company’s working environment is a key determiner in them accepting a job. That’s no surprise, as our surroundings can have a substantial positive effect on our mental well-being.

For instance, psychologists have found that a light blue or green colour scheme can have a calming effect on employees. Equally, 63% of workers consider being in an office with lots of natural light a priority.

A make-or-break factor

However, it’s not just about what the office looks like and contains, it’s also about where it is and how it’s used. That’s why flexible working, where employees use shared or co-working spaces often closer to their homes or nearer to clients, is becoming an increasingly important factor for attracting workers.

This is a big advantage for early-stage, fast-growing businesses with tight overheads, as nearly half of young workers state that they would take a job with lower pay if it offered flexible working. Overall, Regus research shows that 93% of workers worldwide would prefer a flexible model – and over 70% of Brazilians and South Africans would actively change jobs for flexible working.

Its popularity is to be expected, as studies reveal that flexible working means 80% of employees find it easier to manage personal and professional demands. Equally, 72% of workers report that it increases their motivation, making them more productive.

Your office space, then, and how you use it, is in fact a major value-driver – and helps attract and retain key workers in a competitive marketplace.
